"Take a little time for you my sista.
You deserve it and you're worth it."
As I sat bobbing my head to the jazzy sounds of The Marcus Johnson Project, I couldn't help but stretch my neck to see if I saw anyone I knew. I wanted to see who else really cared enough to take a break on a Tuesday evening to celebrate African American liberation.
It was Montgomery County's Juneteenth Celebration. Juneteenth was first celebrated on June 19, 1865, to mark the liberation of African American slaves in the U.S. by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Folks, Black and White, young and old gathered together to celebrate the freedom of African Americans at The Black Rock Center in Germantown, MD. Although I saw the likes of well known local pastors, politicians and educators, the attendance was less than impressive.
We're talking nice, smooth jazz music from one of the coolest jazz artists around, a celebration of the most important event in African American History and all of the collard greens, chicken, fish, fried okra (yummy!), sweet potatoe pie, blueberry pie you could eat - and free, too!
There was no cursing, no smoking, no drinking. As I stuffed my face, I'm thinking, "My Christian homey's are truly missing out." It was one of those rare opportunities to have some good, clean fun for a great cause.
That's when it hit me. I wanted to create a space to encourage sistas to never forget to enjoy life. Whether you choose to spend time with your best homegirls, your honey, your family or just chill alone, you must choose to TAKE time and MAKE time.

This is what I believe:
I believe that in order to achieve a life of wholeness, we must live balanced lives where we make time for God without fail, friends, community and always, always make time for ourselves.
I believe that we are beautiful children of God. We are wonderful, precious and worth it.
I believe we should spend time with at least one or more of our girlfirends at least once per month. It's all about sistahood.
I believe you should make time at last one day each week or every other week to do something especially, specifically, and unequivocally for you.
Why? Because YOU ARE WORTH IT.
